Safeguarding and assurance

Ontario Tech prioritizes the well-being of our campus community, including visitors.

To ensure our graduates and their guests have the best experience, we want to highlight the rules of conduct we have in place for safeguarding and assurance during our ceremonies. Individuals who do not follow these guidelines will not be permitted to participate in, or attend, the ceremony.

  • All graduates are required to show their or government-issued photo ID. You will need to show your ID to check in for your ceremony, pick up your academic regalia and obtain your degree parchment.
  • Students without proper identification will not be permitted to participate in, or attend, the ceremony.
  • A restricted bag policy is in effect. Only small bags are permitted, such as a purse, clutch, or fanny pack.
  • Graduates are asked to leave personal items with their guests or in their vehicles.

To maintain the formality and uniformity of the convocation ceremony, graduates must follow the event code of conduct as it relates to academic dress and are required to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Cap and gown: Graduates must wear the issued cap, gown, and hood without any additional adornments.
  • Prohibited decorations: Decorating of caps is not permitted.
  • Items not permitted: Country flags, sports team fan items, student group buttons, stoles, pins, arm bands, or other items added or affixed to the gown or hood.

Graduates who fail to comply with the attire guidelines will not be permitted to participate in, or attend, the ceremonies.

  • Alcohol.
  • Graduate attire that does not follow the attire guidelines.
  • Banners, signs and posters.
  • Flags.
  • Items that, in the judgment of staff or volunteers, pose a safety hazard or diminish the enjoyment of the event for others.
  • Large bags (except as required for medical or other reasons).
  • Mace, pepper spray, aerosol cans or similar substances.
  • Noise-making devices.
  • Packages, including gifts, that cannot be opened or inspected.
  • Sticks or poles.
  • Weapons or items that mimic weapons.

Items not permitted in the venue must be returned to your vehicle or be discarded off the premises.

Our Campus Emergency Response Team (CERT) is onsite during Convocation.

Trained student volunteers certified in advanced first aid and emergency medical response will assist with medical emergencies. For more information about CERT and their services, visit the CERT web page.
