Indigenous Education and Cultural Services to host Visiting Elder Carolyn King – February 4 to 8
Indigenous Education and Cultural Services will welcome Elder Carolyn King to the UOIT-Baagwating Indigenous Student Centre (UBISC) as part of the university’s Visiting Elder program Monday, February 4 through Friday, February 8.
Elder King is a former Chief of the Mississaugas of New Credit First Nation, the first female to be elected Chief in her community. She is currently the sole proprietor of JDI Business Services. She has conducted cross-cultural training sessions to help employees in government, post-secondary institutions, businesses and community organizations develop a better understanding of Indigenous/First Nations Peoples in Canada.
Elder King has more than 25 years of experience working in the field of First Nations community development. She also has extensive experience in public relations, economic development, the development of environmental planning policies and procedures, and establishing community radio. Her life and work experience bring together a lifelong commitment to the development of her First Nation community. In 2012 she received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of her support for First Nations history and the advancement of Indigenous Peoples.
During her visit, she will be available for lectures at the university’s north and downtown Oshawa locations, as well as one-on-one appointments with students, faculty and staff. To arrange a classroom visit or appointment, please . Visits are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Elder King will also lead a lunch-and-learn session at UBISC on Monday, February 4 from noon to 1 p.m. All are invited to attend.
