Upcoming Durham CAS foster parenting information sessions

There is an urgent need for foster homes in the Durham Region—especially for babies, teens and sibling groups.  (CAS) will host information sessions in January and February to tell people about the need and the process, and to dispel myths about fostering.

The goal of children’s aid societies is to work with families to keep children safe in their own homes. However, when there are serious concerns about the care a child or youth is receiving at home, foster parents and their families can provide a safe, stable and supportive temporary home environment.

When placing a child in care, Durham CAS considers the best interest of the child, and whenever possible, finds a cultural match to ensure the greatest stability. Foster families are from all cultures and socio-economic backgrounds, and include all types of family composition (single or partnered, LGBT2SQ+, with or without children, etc.). Families of all cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Ensuring consistency in children’s lives provides stability and supports a more positive transition during this disruptive time.

At the information sessions, you will meet Durham CAS staff and learn how you can become a foster parent. Topics include:

  • Parents who work at home or outside of the home.
  • Families with pets.
  • Family composition.

The sessions will also answer questions regarding the training, financial compensation and ongoing supports available for foster families.

Upcoming session:

  • Wednesday, February 13 at 7 p.m. - Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, 2440 Durham Regional Highway 2, Bowmanville, Ontario.
