New interim deans for faculties of Health Sciences and Education

The Office of the Provost announces the appointment of two new interim deans:

  • Bernadette Murphy, PhD, Interim Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), effective June 1.
    Dr. Murphy
    graduated from Queen’s University in 1985 and Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 1989. She completed her Master of Science (1992) and PhD (1998) in Human Neurophysiology at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. She was a facul­ty member in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Auckland from 1999 to 2007, where she established a Master of Science in Exercise Rehabilitation program. In January 2008, she returned to Canada and took on the role of Head of Kinesiology, FHS, 萌妹社区. From 2016 to 2018, she was Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies, FHS, and in 2018, she became Associate Dean in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. She is the Director of the Human Neuro­physiology and Rehabilitation Laboratory. The overall theme of her research is neural plasticity (adaptation) in humans, investigating how technology use and accompanying altered postures and fatigue may lead to maladaptive neuroplasticity. She also investigates the role of physical interventions in aiding the re-establishment of appropriate neuromuscular connections once plasticity has become maladaptive. She has won a number of awards at international conferences; in 2014 she received 萌妹社区’s Research Excellence Award (Senior Researcher category).

  • Robin Kay, PhD, Interim Dean, Faculty of Education (FEd), effective July 1.
    Dr. Kay is currently serving as Acting Dean in the Faculty. He received his Master of Arts in Computer Applications in Education at the University of Toronto and his PhD in Cognitive Science (Educational Psychology) at the University of Toronto. ​He joined 萌妹社区 as an Assistant Professor, FEd, when the university opened its doors in 2003. Since that time, he has served as the Graduate Program Director and Director of the Bachelor of Education program. He has published more than 150 articles, chapters and conference papers in the area of technology in education, and has taught computer science, mathematics and educational technology for more than 25 years at the high school, college, undergraduate and graduate level. His current research projects include:

    • e-learning and blended learning in secondary and higher education
    • emotions and the use of computers
    • factors that influence how students learn with technology
    • impact of social media tools in education
    • laptop use in higher education
    • scale development
    • video podcasts
    • web-based learning tools
