Pollinator Tour and Nature Cleanup – June 20
In celebration of National Pollinator Week, Ontario Tech will open its doors to community members and students to showcase the exciting expansion of its Pollinator Project. This initiative enables the bee populations to recover after a rapid decline in the last several years due to habitat loss and pesticide use.
The tour will include:
- Three-hectare hydro-seeded wildflower garden
- 40 honey-producing hives maintained by Royal Meadows Farms
- Solitary Bee Hotels, made of recycled material.
- Visit to the campus Community Garden plots, tree nursery, greenhouse and solar panels.
The tour will also incorporate a nature cleanup. If you’re interested in participating, please wear close-toed shoes; gloves and bags will be provided.
The university’s expert apiarists will give a Beekeeping 101 talk, answer questions, and give participants a chance to look at the hive window box. Come prepared with all of the bee questions you may have! Also bring some cash to purchase Ontario Tech wildflower honey produced on campus, or infused honey made by Royal Meadows.
Note: ‘Bee-aware’ if you have bee allergies, as you will be near beehives during the tour.
