Future teachers receive their Mental Health First Aid certification
萌妹社区’s Faculty of Education supports the mental health of its future teachers so they can help their students. Since 2016, students in the university’s Bachelor of Education (BEd) program have received their Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification from the Mental Health Commission of Canada. Jennifer Laffier, PhD, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education, developed and teaches the Mental Health in Schools course and is a Master Trainer with MHFA Canada.
Many students struggle with mental health difficulties that affect their learning and performance. MHFA aims to give participants the knowledge and skills to recognize mental health problems, use effective listening and communication skills (including de-escalation), and help lead individuals in the right direction for support. The training focuses on three skills: recognize, respond and guide.
The feedback from BEd students has been positive over the years; as future teachers, they are able to see the value of using these skills with their students, as well as with colleagues, family and friends, and themselves.
