University鈥檚 Smoke-Free Campus Policy now in effect

The Regional Municipality of Durham recently amended its to include educational institutions. This new bylaw applies to 萌妹社区’s campus.

In anticipation of the Region’s bylaw amendment, in October 2018 the university implemented an interim policy to allow time for the campus community to adjust to becoming smoke-free.

Last winter we held consultations with the campus community. The Task Force on a Smoke-Free Campus reviewed collected feedback that helped inform the university’s permanent .

Smoking and/or vaping of any type, including tobacco, cannabis and shisha, is prohibited anywhere on campus, including the university’s downtown Oshawa location buildings and all student residences on campus. The policy applies to all campus community members, including students, faculty, staff, visitors and contractors. The policy also provides clarity regarding enforcement. Please .

The Office of Campus Safety (OCS) introduced the Smoke-Free Campus Policy by focusing on education, awareness and voluntary compliance.

While formal enforcement of this policy falls to campus security and the OCS, the campus community can also contribute to maintaining a smoke-free campus through respectful, thoughtful and co-operative reminders to others.

The university will continue to work with individual students, faculty and staff who have a cannabis prescription for medical reasons. Students can also access a number of smoking cessation support services through the Campus Health Centre.
