Faculty of Science Professor co-authors article on concerning use of plastic habitats in freshwater ecosystems

, Professor, , recently co-authored an article on the concerning use of plastic habitats in freshwater ecosystems and for restoration.

The use of plastic pipes and panels in freshwater fish habitats or to restore freshwater systems has become more popular in some regions. Dr. Kirkwood and her co-authors examined the use of plastics and highlighted their concerns. There is a limited evidence base supporting the use of plastic structures in freshwater systems from an ecological perspective, and evidence that the use of plastics does not contribute to pollution through plastic degradation or leeching.

The article, published in the journal , concludes the use of plastic in freshwater systems is nothing short of littering.
