The (CDMS) program in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities is delighted to announce this year’s winners of the Global News Communication Scholarship competition: Shaun McLeod and Natalia Snow. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be CDMS students with a minimum 3.7 GPA, and write a short essay about how what they learn in the program connects to the future of the communications and digital media industry in Canada.

This year, Shaun’s and Natalia’s short essays explored what ��������’s mission to engage ‘technology with a conscience’ means to them as CDMS students and future communications professionals.

Excerpt from Shaun’s winning essay:

"In my time studying CDMS at Ontario Tech, there has been a steady theme of understanding how media in all of its forms can impact the way we view the world...The professors in CDMS don't shy away from areas where communications have lacked in the past…I've also found the program has been very proactive about tackling Indigenous issues…such as the battle for data sovereignty in Indigenous communities. This is something I highly appreciate as a Métis student…I came to Ontario Tech open-minded, and going forward into my professional career, I believe that CDMS has equipped me with an ethics system that is based on the understanding that communication can be a powerful tool, and it is up to us to wield it for good."

Excerpt from Natalia’s winning essay:

“Ontario Tech 's mission to engage ‘technology with a conscience’ means that we must use new technological advancements to benefit society…I’ve had the experience of repeatedly learning about the consequences of unethical behaviours in the digital world throughout the program. I must apply these lessons to my daily life to make ethical decisions regarding my use of technology…As a future professional in the educational field…teaching students the importance of acting ethically with technology is imperative…I will transfer the valuable knowledge I had the privilege of obtaining over the past four years at the university, from the CDMS program and the University Works program, into all aspects of my future professional career. Moreover, I will continue to learn and reflect upon the significance of Ontario Tech's mission to engage ‘technology with a conscience’.”
