Campus signage and wayfinding project update
The Campus Signage and Wayfinding Project began with a campuswide audit of all signage in early 2023. Now the physical updates are rolling out across campus.
The Communications and Marketing department continues to work with the Office of Campus Infrastructure and Sustainability and other involved parties in each building to prepare for the transition to the new system that will help improve wayfinding on campus.
Completed to date:
- Shawenjigewining Hall (SHA)
- Charles Hall (CHA)
- Energy Research Centre (ERC)
- Software and Informatics Research Centre (SIR)
Currently underway is the transformation of the Ontario Power Generation Engineering Building (ENG), ACE and Clean Energy Research Centre (CER).
The Science Building (SCI) and the Business and Information Technology Building (BIT) will require additional preparation, including a wall-surface retrofit to replace some of the original 20-year-old acoustic panels and bulletin-board wall finishes. A painted drywall finish will be introduced in these areas, which will bring the buildings in line with the completed interiors in other university buildings by brightening up the corridors and atriums while providing a clean and suitable surface for new signage. The preparation for the retrofit is now underway, with the wall retrofit being completed during the summer months and the signage installation expected to be complete by end of the year.
A wayfinding and signage system that works well often goes unnoticed. The goal is to carry guests, students, faculty, staff from Simcoe Street or Conlin Road all the way to an office, classroom, lab or event without them needing to ask for directions. It’s an exciting opportunity to update the entire campus to an accurate and functioning system following 20 years of amazing growth.
