FSSH Assistant Professor participates in Ukraine Today speaker series

On September 15, , Assistant Professor, Communication and Digital Media Studies, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FSSH), interviewed Toronto-based graphic artist Michael Cherkas for the Ukraine Today speakers series The interview took place at the Speakers Corner Pavilion, presented by the Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival. The attracts more than one million visitors each year who come to learn about Ukrainian culture and experience its music, dance, art and cuisine.

Cherkas, originally from Oshawa, recently published , an original work of historical fiction and one of the first graphic novels about the Holodomor, the famine-genocide in Ukraine in the early 1930s. Dr. Kish, who grew up in the Ukrainian diaspora and has lived in Ukraine, spoke with Cherkas about his artistic process and extensive research on the experiences of survivors and the broader political context that continues to resonate today. Cherkas has published numerous comics, including:
