Join the Women in Research Council's next Fireside Chat with Dr. Fatma Gzara on November 20

The Women in Research Council (WIRC) is excited to host its next Fireside Chat featuring on Wednesday, November 20 from noon to 2 p.m. 

The Fireside Chat series invites women from across academia to share their stories about their trajectories, challenges, triumphs, and lessons learned as women in academia. The talk with be moderated by , WIRC Chair, and audience members will be invited to engage in a question-and-answer session following the talk. The event is open to all faculty, staff and students. This is a hybrid event; participants can join in-person or online.

About the speaker:

is Professor in the Department of Management Science and Engineering at the University of Waterloo (UWaterloo), and a Professional Engineer in Ontario. She is Co-founder and Co-director of the Waterloo Analytics and Optimization Lab (WANOPT) and former Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies at the UWaterloo Department of Management Science and Engineering. She is founding member of the Waterloo AI Institute and the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics.

Her primary research interests are in supply chain analytics and large-scale optimization. Her current work focuses on enhancing supply chain operations through data-driven approaches, examining emerging technologies in logistics and distribution, such as crowdsourced and drone delivery, and optimizing systems that operate in uncertain environments. Recently, she has led several industry collaborations on data analytics and optimization, supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, Ontario Centres of Excellence, and mitacs, with industry partners such as Bombardier Inc., Unilever, Navblue Inc., and Dematic Ltd. Her research has been published in prestigious journals such as Transportation Science, Informs Journal on Optimization, Journal of Global Optimization, Omega, Networks, Computers & Operations Research, European Journal of Operational Research, and IISE Transactions. She is very active in the Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS), having chaired the 2020-2021 CORS Annual Conference. She received the CORS 2022 Eldon Gunn Service Award, and the University of Waterloo's Distinguished and Outstanding Performance awards in 2010, 2016, 2021, and 2022.
