Ontario Tech postdoc researcher makes presentation at major gathering of health physics experts in Florida
Dr. Lekhnath Ghimire, an Ontario Tech postdoctoral researcher in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science (FEAS) working under the supervision of Dr. Edward Waller, recently delivered a Professional Enrichment Program (PEP) entitled ‘Advancements in Retrospective and Accident Physical Dosimetry: Techniques for Acute and Chronic Dose Assessment’ at the in Orlando, Florida. The PEP is a research-focused, specialized, 2-hour training program (lecture-based) for health physics professionals.
In his presentation, Dr. Ghimire highlighted the latest developments in continuous wave electron paramagnetic resonance retrospective and accident dosimetry, utilizing both X- and Q-band techniques. He also explored the use of non-human biota for assessing environmental doses and monitoring environmental exposures in both normal and accident scenarios.
Dr. Ghimire further discussed advancements in external physical dosimetry, focusing on thermoluminescence dosimetry using dust (silicate) particles and cell phone chips for dose assessment in various situations. He introduced a non-destructive dose assessment technique using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimetry with cell phone back glasses, emphasizing the need for custom-built OSL equipment to fit whole cell phones for dose measurement without dismantling them.
This is the first time a postdoctoral fellow and a faculty member from FEAS have presented a Professional Enrichment Program at the IRPA16/HPS conference.
